FSI

Integrated system FlowVision+Abaqus

The system solves multi-physic problems like:

  • hydro-aeroelasticity
  • unsteady fluid-structure interaction
  • conjugate heat transfer with thermal deformations

The CFD and FEA systems are integrated by means of direct common interface.

In general case, FSI simulation involves moving bodies, free surfaces, and conjugate heat exchange. The body rotation and translation (e.g., in car tire aquaplaning simulation) are defined by user. The computation grid is automatically rebuilt after each time step. The grid takes into account structural deformations calculated in Abaqus. Grid generation process is fully automatic.

FlowVision 2.xx.xx

Connection is performed with use of Muti-Physics (MP) Manager. This module has been developed as a mediator between FlowVision and Abaqus (explicit or implicit). It

  • enables specifying a coupled project (setting up a project takes minutes),
  • launches coupled calculations.
  • monitors FlowVision and Abaqus solvers,
  • automatically transmits data in both directions through a socket connection after a pre-defined time step.

The crucial characteristics are output to the MP Manager graphical interface. This enables a user to analyze the solution in the course of calculations.

FlowVision 3.xx.xx (-HPC)

Connection is performed with use of Muti-Physics (MP) Manager and MPM Connector.

MP Manager

  • enables specifying a coupled project (setting up a project takes minutes),
  • launches coupled calculations.

MPM Connector

  • monitors FlowVision-HPC and Abaqus solvers,
  • automatically transmits data in both directions through a socket connection after a pre-defined time step.

The crucial characteristics are output to Viewer. FlowVision-HPC and Abaqus can be installed on different platforms.

Fluid-Structure-Interaction: direct coupling with SIMULIA Abaqus

The link between the FV and FE grids is automatically established in the process of grid generation.

Schematic for direct coupling with SIMULIA Abaqus

  • TAU is the data exchange time step between FlowVision and Abaqus
  • TAU is determined by physical processes proceeding in the fluid and deformable body
  • TAU is found experimentally for each FSI problem
  • Well selected TAU provides stable calculations and convergence to steady-state or periodic solution
  • The coupling procedure is explicit
  • The coupling procedure is fast
  • Information exchange is performed through socket connection

Coupled solutions:

  • Aviation industry: flatter, splashdown of a helicopter on deformable ballonets
  • Shipbuilding: ship launching
  • Automotive industry: spoiler deformation
  • Tire industry: tire aquaplaning
  • Engine building: conjugate heat transfer, thermal durability of engine
  • Turbomachinery: blade deformation
  • Construction: wind deformation of erection

FEA software Abaqus

Abaqus FEA software is the world leader in numerical simulation of linear and non-linear stress and strain state of a body or structure. It is based on the finite-element approach to stress and strain calculations. Abaqus software has advanced tools for modeling arbitrary deformations of different materials, predicting crack formation, fatigue assessment, and crash analysis. Abaqus is widely used in aerospace, military, and automotive industries.
